Supporter Scarves
I received an email about a project which is making scarves for the World Cup, so I thought I’d tell you all about them. The project’s name is NGO SUKUMA PROJECT and is based in the Soshanguve township in Gauteng. They’re “adding to the spirit and excitement in Gauteng by sewing colourful scarves symbolizing the South African flag for Bafana supporters”.
The project started in Soshanguve at a small community church where 70% of the congregation are unemployed. Like so many projects in South Africa, it was started as a result of hunger, poverty, unskilled labour, unemployment and inequality.
Because of the strict copyright issues, the project notified FIFA of the logo they wanted to use. It sets the scarves apart from anything else available.
The scarf is handmade from trilobal (soccer shirt fabric) flag-coloured squares sewn together. Each sells for R60. If you’re interested in buying one, please contact Janine Couchman at sukumaproject@gmail.com. It’s definitely a worthwhile cause :)
