A Socially Uplifting Holiday
I’ve just read an interesting article on a South Africa Tourism website about social upliftment through tourism. I don’t think many of us actually think about the money we spend when we travel nationally or internationally and how spending it affects the locals in the area we’re visiting.
The article has a quote by Anita Roddick, the Body Shop Founder, saying “The majority of us do not want our holidays to be at someone else’s expense, particularly when we go to developing countries. As consumers we have the right to know the impact that our money and holidays have on people in the destinations”.

I think this is something that’s quite important for South Africans to think about whilst visiting other towns or cities this Christmas. How much of the money that we’re going to be spending there will actually be benefitting the locals that need it.
Just a suggestion, but wouldn’t it be nice to go on a local township tour, eat a meal at a small township restaurant or buy a couple of Christmas presents from the crafters selling their wares on the side of the road?
A good way of “giving back” whilst on holiday. I like.
