The Uniform Project

I came across a very lovely and inspiring blog the other day called The Uniform Project which I want to share with you. It is really worth checking out; it made me smile!
Starting from May 2009, Sheena Matheiken has pledged to wear one dress for one year as an exercise in sustainable fashion. Her friend Eliza Starbuck has designed and produced 7 identical black dresses for Sheena to wear, one for each day of the week. Every day Sheena reinvents the dress with various layers and accessories, the majority of which are vintage, hand-made or hand-me-downs.Each outfit is recorded and you can check out the daily creations via her blog at http://theuniformprojectblog.com
Even better, The Uniform Project is not only about sustainable fashion but is being used as a year-long fundraiser for the Akanksha Foundation, a grassroots movement that is revolutionizing education in India. At the end of the year, all funds raised will go toward Akanksha’s School Project to fund uniforms and other educational expenses for children living in Indian slums. So far over $16 000 has been donated. As well as donating money towards the Akanksha Foundation, individuals and retailers can also donate accessories and clothing to the project to help Sheena put together her wonderful outfits.
This is such a fantastic, creative project and all in the name of a good cause as well as raising awareness of the need for a more sustainable approach to fashion and our relationship with clothing and trends. The outfits are really worth having a look through – such food for thought! I was really inspired to look at my own wardrobe in a different way. Check out the website at www.theuniformproject.com
