Let’s Send Some Love
It’s not nice to end the week on a sad note, but I feel I need to share this with you. One of my dear sewing ladies from Nekkies, and my main helper with the veggie project, Beatrice, was recently involved in a very bad taxi accident. She was thrown out onto the highway and seconds later the taxi rolled onto her, trapping her beneath. Everyone is saying that it’s a complete miracle that she survived, and that she didn’t break a single bone. Most of the damage is to her head.
I visited Beatrice at her home yesterday, and must say that she is being amazingly positive and strong. Between you and me, seeing her all swollen, battered and bruised, and seeing the dilapidated inside of her simple home for the first time, was an overwhelming experience for me. Here’s a woman who has so little herself but she’s always found the time to be heavily involved in her church, teach art to the local children, wants to grow veggies for the “poor”, all whilst sewing and cleaning houses for a living, never mind raising a family.
Hearing how the hospital handled her case, upset me as well. No blankets for her bed, no painkillers at all, and she was discharged after one day – the serious head injuries seemingly ignored.
I think my biggest realisation is that this is Beatrice’s story and yet another tremendous difficulty that she needs to overcome, but at the same time, this is how the majority of our country, I suppose even the world, live. Beautiful people, with the kindest of hearts, struggling each day to make ends meet, facing difficulties and living circumstances beyond our imaginings.
All I ask of you this weekend, is that you please send Beatrice, and every person who lives their life in circumstances like these, all the love that you can. It’s the least we can do, but I guess it’s what counts the most.
